Japanese Holiday Decoration Part 2: Shimenawa (Wreath)
Selected date Saturday December 7
Selected time 1:00 PM  –  2:00 PM

Welcome to Japanese Holiday Decoration: Shimenawa on Saturday, December 7th, 2019.

A shimenawa is a sacred straw decorative festoon in the Shinto style. Its origins are from ancient Japanese mythology when the Sun Goddess - Amaterasu - was removed from the Cave of Heaven, then subsequently prevented to return there by a rope across the Cave's entrance. This symbolizes a sanctuary against future bad events. During New Years, Japanese make wishes and prayers for luck to the Shimenawa.

This workshop, includes all materials. This makes it easy for the beginner to simply assemble the arrangement with step-by-step instruction.

Check-in time at Gift Shop: 12:45 p.m.

The workshop will begin at: 1:00 p.m.

(Please arrive at the garden by 12:30 pm if you would like to see FREE Kadomatsu demonstration  by our curator, Ben Schrepf 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.)

A kadomatsu (literally "gate pine") is a traditional Japanese decoration of the New Year placed in pairs in front of homes. For the Japanese, this time of the year means purification rituals, such as cleaning one's home and office, settling old debts, encouraging blessings, and also to welcome ancestral spirits or kami (Sprits of nature) of the harvest.
